The offseason is well underway in baseball, and not many moves have been made yet. However, with the winter meetings fast approaching, baseball fans should have a lot to look forward to.
When it comes to the Philadelphia Phillies, there have been some rumors about a possible trade for starting pitcher Garrett Crochet of the Chicago White Sox. They only need to find a fifth starter with the starting rotation set with Zack Wheeler, Aaron Nola, Ranger Suarez, and Cristopher Sanchez.
Will that fifth starter be Taijuan Walker? Could top prospect Andrew Painter steal the spot out of spring training? Only time will tell.
Per Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Phillies have had extensive trade talks with the White Sox surrounding Crochet. Should the Phillies make the move and acquire him?
Nightengale notes that the White Sox are concerned with Alec Bohm's struggles in the second half of the 2024 season.
"They have spoken about Bohm and outfield prospect Justin Crawford in extensive trade talks with the Chicago White Sox for starter Garrett Crochet, but the White Sox are concerned with Bohm’s struggles the second half, posting a .681 OPS with just four home runs."
Adding Crochet to the already powerful Phillies rotation wouldn't be a bad idea. Adding another left-hander could benefit the Phillies greatly.
Crochet, in 2024, finished with a record of 6-12 and a 3.58 ERA. He would make 32 starts for the White Sox and throw 146 total innings.
Crochet would also finish 2024 with a 4.1 WAR, a 1.07 WHIP and would tally 12.9 strikeouts per nine innings. Similar to Bohm, Crochet is under control for two more years.
The Phillies front office will have a lot of thinking to do this offseason. Are they willing to give up a top prospect like Crawford to benefit the rotation?
