Phillies showing interest in Adames and Bregman

The Philadelphia Phillies are ready to shake up their roster for next season. The outfield will likely be a top priority, but what about third base?

Third baseman Alec Bohm has been the subject of trade rumors this entire offseason. No one knows where he will end up. Could the Phillies swing a trade with a team and acquire a new third baseman?

The Phillies have reportedly shown interest in Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Willy Adames and Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman. Could either one be in red pinstripes in 2025? Only time will tell.

Should the Phillies move on from Bohm this offseason, they must find a replacement. Per Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the Phillies are expected to make a strong play for Bregman or Adames if Bohm is traded.

"If the Phillies trade Bohm, they are expected to make a strong play for Alex Bregman, whose talent and personality would fit in perfectly with the team or perhaps sign Willy Adames and move him over to third base."

There are positives and negatives to signing each player. Let's explore.

2024 season numbers

In 145 games played in 2024, Bregman tallied 26 home runs and 75 RBI in 581 plate appearances. He finished with a batting average of .260. Defensively, he made 10 errors at third base.

In 161 games played in 2024, Adames tallied 32 home runs and 112 RBI in 610 plate appearances. He finished with a batting average of .251. Defensively, he made 20 errors at shortstop.

Age

Both players are young which should make them both enticing for the Phillies. However, Bohm is younger than both, so should they let him go?

Bregman is only 30 years old and Adames is 29 years old. As the Phillies are a team that loves to acquire young talent, both players could be an option for their infield.

Positions

This is where the negatives come in for Adames. If the Phillies part ways with Bohm, they'll need to find a third baseman to replace him.

Adames is a natural shortstop, so that's already a problem. Could the Phillies sign him and move him to third? Yes, but it's unlikely.

Another option for the Phillies is they move Trea Turner to third and allow Adames to play shortstop. Turner has had his fair share of errors at shortstop since signing with the Phillies and fans are getting tired of it.

In fact, Turner has committed 40 total errors (18 throwing and 22 fielding) since signing his 11-year, $300M with the Phillies back in 2022.

Could this make Bregman more enticing to sign?

Contracts

With both players being free agents this offseason, they're going to want big contracts with their next team. Will the Phillies be willing to give out such a contract?

Bregman is currently seeking a contract worth at least $200M according to Nightengale. This may pose a problem for the Phillies.

The Phillies have prospect Aiden Miller making his way up and should be ready for the big leagues in the next year or so. He currently is with Class AA Reading Fightin Phils.

Signing Bregman to a big contract to play third base may block Miller's every chance of playing in the big leagues. Should the Phillies block out young talent to shake their roster up and give themselves the best chance to win the World Series?

The Phillies front office will have a lot of thinking to do this offseason. Will Bohm be a Phillie in 2025? Will the Phillies sign Bregman or Adames?

Buckle up, Phillies fans!
