With the winter meetings fast approaching, baseball fans should have much to look forward to. When it comes to the Philadelphia Phillies, they're ready to shake up their roster and get back to the World Series.
Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm has been a topic of discussion for weeks now and no one knows if he'll be with the team in 2025. Fans' hopes might have been diminished a bit as a new team has reached out about the All-Star third baseman.
Per Adam Jude of The Seattle Times, the Seattle Mariners have reached out about the asking price for Bohm. He would go on to say that Bohm has been the name most linked to the Mariners.
"Philadelphia’s Alec Bohm has been the most popular named linked to the Mariners in trade speculation early in the offseason."
Bohm has been the Phillies best run-producer in the last two seasons. He would record 97 RBI in 2023 and 2024. Is it worth giving up a player that plates you this many runs in a single season?
In 2024, Bohm would belt 15 home runs and finish with a batting average of .280 in 143 games played. He would come up to the plate 554 times for the Phillies last year.
What is the asking price for Bohm? Starting pitching. The Phillies asked for one of the Mariners' top pitchers George Kirby or Logan Gilbert in return for Bohm.
Jude would report that the Mariners would like to hold on to all five of their pitchers in their starting rotation that ranked as the best in MLB this year. Could the Phillies keep Bohm after all if the price is too high?
Kirby, in 2024, finished with a 14-11 record and a 3.53 ERA in 33 games started for the Mariners. He picked up 179 strikeouts and only gave up 22 home runs the entire season.
Gilbert, in 2024, finished with a record of 9-12 and a 3.23 ERA in 33 games started. He picked up 220 strikeouts and only gave up 26 home runs all season in 2024.
The Phillies still have Bohm under control for two more years. He won an arbitration battle with the Phillies last offseason and was awarded $4M.
Bohm has some maturing to do if he stays with the Phillies or moves on. Baseball is a hard game, but letting it get into your head can be a bad look for you and the team. The explicative language and bat and helmet slamming need to come to an end.
Will Bohm be in red pinstripes in 2025? Will the Phillies have to look for a new third baseman? Only time will tell.
