The Philadelphia Flyers started a set of back-to-back games Saturday afternoon when they faced the Boston Bruins in Boston. In a very undisciplined game, the Flyers blew an early lead, which ultimately cost them the game.
The Flyers gave the Bruins their first power play of the game at the 1:41 mark of the first period as they got caught with too many men on the ice. Joel Farabee would serve the penalty. The Bruins managed to get three shots on goal but the Flyers did a nice job of getting into shooting lanes.
Mark Kastelic gave the Flyers their first power play of the game at the 7:13 mark of the first period as he got called for tripping.
Matvei Michkov gave the Flyers a 1-0 on the power play as his wrist shot beat Bruins goaltender Jeremy Swayman's glove side. Sean Couturier poked the puck free to him to the left circle. Couturier and Andrae collected assists.
The Bruins got their second power play of the game at the 7:42 mark of the first period as Cam York got called for slashing. They didn't capitalize on the opportunity but had a few good chances in tight.
Michkov gave the Flyers a 2-0 lead at the 18:24 mark of the first period. Travis Sanheim found him on the backdoor with a great pass across ice and Michkov's wrist shot beat the glove of Swayman. Sanheim picked up the lonely assist.
York gave the Bruins their third power play of the game at the 3:32 mark of the second period as he got called for tripping.
Emil Andrae and Charlie McAvoy both got called for roughing at the 4:37 mark of the second period. The Bruins still maintained their power play. They capitalized on this one as Trent Frederic found a loose puck in front and put it past Flyers goaltender Aleksei Kolosov. Lohrei and Geekie tallied assists. This goal happened at the 5:26 mark of the second period.
The Flyers went up 3-1 on the Bruins at the 15:29 mark of the second period as York's wrist shot from the point went over Swayman's glove. Sanheim set him up with a nice pass to center. Sanheim and Konecny were given assists.
McAvoy picked up a double minor roughing penalty and Owen Tippett picked up a minor penalty for roughing at the 16:31 mark of the second period. This gave the Flyers their second power play of the game. They didn't take advantage of the opportunity as Swayman had all the answers to their shots.
Frederic got the Bruins within one at the 5:18 mark of the third period. His wrist shot beat the glove of Kolosov. This made the score 3-2 Flyers. Coyle and Kastelic were given assists.
Travis Konecny got called for interference at the 6:05 mark of the third period which gave the Bruins their fourth power play of the game. Kolosov made some huge saves to keep the Flyers in front.
The Bruins received their fifth power play of the game at the 10:33 mark of the third period as Garnet Hathaway got called for tripping. They, again, couldn't capitalize but got a few good shots on net.
Brad Marchand tied the game up at three at the 14:38 mark of the third period as Justin Brazeau found him ahead of the play and sent him on the breakaway. Marchand put the puck through the legs of Kolosov. Brazeau tallied the lonely assist.
Couturier gave the Bruins their sixth power play of the afternoon at the 18:03 mark of the third period as he got called for tripping. The Bruins had plenty of chances but Kolosov had all the answers.
Pavel Zacha won the game for the Bruins at the 2:49 mark of the overtime period. David Pastrnak passed the puck across the ice to Zacha who had a wide-open net to shoot at. Pastrnak picked up the only assist. The Bruins would win four to three.
The Flyers went one for two on the power play and five for six on the penalty kill.
Kolosov kept the Flyers in the game for most of the afternoon. He saved 27 of 31 shots which gave him a .871 save percentage.
